With a population just under 85,000, Allen, Texas has become a popular choice for people working in the Dallas area who want a home to escape to outside the busy urban environment. With a number of Dallas suburbs to choose from, though, you may be curious about why so many people decide on Allen, Texas.

It’s One of the Best Towns for Families

Last year, in the July issue of Family Circle, Allen was cited as one of the best towns in the entire country to raise a family. For one thing, 52% of households in the city have children. Therefore, you can safely assume that your children will have no problem making friends and you’ll have plenty of kid-friendly establishments and services in the area too.

It Has Allen High School

Speaking of being family-friendly, the local high school is the third largest in the entire state. Their $60 million football stadium is just one testament to how amazing this school is for the students who attend. There is also a performing arts center that can fit up to 1,500 and a career technology program that allows students to gain experience in a number of different career options, ranging from business to engineering, before they graduate.

Despite its large size, Allen High School is known for the close attention each teacher is able to pay to their students.

It’s an Amazing Suburb 

A couple years back, D Magazine took a look at over 60 suburbs that are located within the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Despite that many towns, Allen landed in the top 10 and for good reason. Here you’ll find plenty of parks and access to nature, an award-winning library and all kinds of homes for every size-family and income level. There is also no shortage of local businesses for everything from clothing to fine dining.

It’s Extremely Safe

Another reason to consider Allen is because of its extremely low crime rate. This is just one more benefit to those with families to think about. The non-violent crime rate in Allen is just 19 per 1,000 residents. Its violent crime rate is practically nonexistent at 0.748 per every 1,000 people who call the town home. That’s just 0.00075%!

Allen has been repeatedly recognized as being one of the top 10 safest cities in the entire country.

It’s Still Growing

Residents who have been here for 10 years or more can tell you all about how much the city has grown. They’ll remember a time when Allen had a Wal-Mart, a Dairy Queen and a grocery store. Now, of course, there’s just about anything you could want in your hometown.

However, the city is still growing, meaning you still have time to pick up a property that will become a great investment down the road. The median age right now is about 35, which represents many of the residents who have started young families.

The population density at the moment is about 3,300 people per square miles, but it’s also experiencing 13.3% growth. In the next 10 years, then, you can expect the city to be even more popular.

It’s Great for Retirement

With all this talk of young families, you could be forgiven for thinking Allen wouldn’t have much to offer the older crowd. However, Allen is also a great place for retirees. Forbes put it in the top 25 of all cities across the country for retirees back in 2011. That’s because of the city’s favorable tax rate, low level of crime, cost of living and median home price.
